What is Silver Diamine Flouride (SDF) and How is it used?
Silver diamine fluoride is useful for the treatment of hypersensitivity, tooth decay, and cavities. It’s an FDA-authorized antibiotic liquid that is clinically used to control actual dental caries and to avoid further progression of the disease. While the perfect approach to treat teeth with rot is by removing the decay and doing a restoration, this option of treatment enables us to stop the decay with noninvasive techniques, especially with young children that have baby teeth.
How does silver diamine fluoride work?
It is made out of two essential segments: silver and fluoride. Silver goes about as an anti-microbial agent while at the same time strengthens the primary protective layer of your teeth called dentin. Fluoride is the active ingredient that puts a stop to tooth decay and keeps extra decay from developing.
During your child's visit, your dental specialist will brush and wash their teeth without paste to prepare for the treatment. Your child’s teeth will then be dried and any debris, for example, plaque, will be removed. SDF is applied to the affected teeth with a micro brush and the solution is allowed to cure on the tooth for two minutes. Once the tooth has been treated, we encourage patients not to eat or drink anything for at least an hour to enable it to cure completely.
